URBAN LINES, NATURAL CURRENTS: CARVING A DIALOGUE IN WOOD

This print was made from  a single woodblock. My aim is to explore the tension and dialogue between organic flow and rigid structure. The geometric forms are part of the urban grid I am so familiar with, as a life long Brooklynite—who frequently visits my neighborhood treasure, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.

The wavy, flowing lines—maybe water, maybe fire—disrupt these hard edges. They speak to the unpredictable forces of nature and emotion, slipping between order and chaos.

I’m interested in boundaries—where human-made and natural systems overlap, interact, and sometimes contradict each other. This piece may be read as both a map and a mystery: a constructed space that reveals as much as it conceals.

The visible grain of the wood and the physicality of the carving process are essential to the final image. It’s not only what is depicted but how it is made—without a specific plan or outline, it is carved by hand, one line at a time—that brings the piece to life.

Watch this print come to life—one cut at a time.

No plan, just process.

Inspired by Brooklyn’s edges and the quiet wild of the Botanic Garden. Where geometry meets flow, and structure gives way to something more alive.
